POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGY

Objectives

The PGDMLT course is career oriented that opens up new horizons to work in laboratory, blood bank, hospital, forensic and genetic science, pharmaceutical company and research organizations. This course provides analytical skills in different areas of clinical laboratory, clinical research and quality standards. In the rapidly growing area of scientific knowledge and skills, laboratory science is an important area of study for medical laboratory technologist. It delivers the knowledge in the field of Hematology, Clinical Pathology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Serology and Immunology, Histopathology, Cytopathology and Transfusion Medicine.

Program Objectives

  • The enrolled students will be competent with the knowledge and technical skills to obtain national and international certification at the Scientist/technologist level of practice.
  • They will be capable to have diverse responsibilities in areas of analysis and clinical decision-making, regulatory compliance with applicable regulations, education, and quality assurance/performance improvement wherever laboratory testing is researched, developed or performed.
  • The students will be trained for financial, operations, marketing, and human resource management of the clinical laboratory to enable cost-effective, high- quality, value-added laboratory services; Information management to enable effective, timely, accurate, and cost-effective reporting of laboratory-generated Information, and; Research design/practice sufficient to evaluate published studies as an informed consumer.
  • Students will develop and analyze innovative strategies for effective communication with the patients.
  • To strengthen the decision power and exercise appropriate judgment skills, to be applied especially during crisis.
  • Collaboration and outreach: transform the future of medical laboratory sciences, clinical research, and education by fostering novel collaborative alignments among basic and clinical scientists, clinicians, and educators throughout the University, as well as with local and international public and private partners.

Program Learning Outcomes

  • To develop and establish procedures for collecting, processing, and analyzing specimens.
  • To Perform a full range of clinical laboratory tests in such areas as hematology, clinical chemistry, immunohematology, microbiology, serology/immunology, coagulation, molecular, analytical tests of body fluids and other emerging diagnostics with accuracy.
  • To perform assays according to laboratory protocol and recognize factors interfering with test results and take corrective action.
  • Operate equipment properly, trouble-shoot, and establish and perform preventive and corrective maintenance.
  • To evaluate laboratory data results using quality control and quality assurance measures, and institute proper procedures to maintain accuracy and precision.
  • Apply scientific principles, such as physiology, immunology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, laboratory principles and methodology to the clinical setting.
  • To evaluate discrepancies that impact laboratory services by integrating and relating data generated by the various clinical laboratory departments and make corrective decisions.
  • To communicate through oral and written skills, effectively and professionally to enable consultative interactions with healthcare personnel, external relations, customer service and patients in order to function successfully as a member of the healthcare team.
  • To demonstrate ethical and professional conduct with patients, laboratory personnel, health- care professionals and the public.

Career Prospects

Graduates have a wide choice of practice settings: hospitals, independent laboratories, clinics, public health facilities, forensic crime laboratories, sales and marketing of diagnostic instruments and reagents, federal and state regulatory agencies, and research and development of future clinical tests and instruments.
There are numerous opportunities for a student to continue his/her education after completing the BSMLS degree. They can peruse higher education in the field of Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology and Transfusion Medicine.
