Objectives

Credit Hours of a PhD Programmed:

PhD is a three plus years program during which a student is expected to complete major and minor courses of 18 credits, writes synopsis, conducts a pilot project, successful completes comprehensive examination, carries out research, writes thesis & dissertation and thesis defence. Finally thesis approval is required after evaluation from two foreign specialists/experts of advanced/developed countries before the award of PhD degree.

Detailed Information about PhD Program in Public Health:

The PhD program will require both Course work and Research work. The research and thesis dissertation shall be supervised by a Principal Thesis Supervisor and Co-Supervisor/s from related areas of expertise as per rules approved by GIU PMDC, & HEC. Selection criteria of “Supervisory Committee” comprising of HEC approved supervisor and Co-Supervisor/s as per HEC/UOL rules & regulations.

The research capability has to be demonstrated through publications in the journals/proceedings and presentation through seminars, symposia and workshops. Upon admission to program a supervisor will be assigned to the prospective enrolled student who will help the student to select the topic of research for synopsis during the first semester of admission. The GIU-PhD board of studies (BOS) advance study & research committee (ASRC) will approve the synopsis and supervisory committee shall monitor the progress of the research project and thesis dissertation. Learning resources may include libraries, journals online internet facility available in the UOL.

There are four major steps to the doctoral studies curriculum: The first is the core doctoral curriculum, required for all students, comprising of a total of 48 credit-hours. The second step consists of comprehensive written and oral examination after the completion of course work, which is followed by completing the research and writing of thesis dissertation. The thesis is then sent to two external examiners of the relevant subject from among the developed countries. After the approval by the foreign external examiners the student has to defend the thesis before the faculty board before the award of PhD degree.
